College of Letters & Science students may submit a petition to request exceptions to UC Santa Barbara's policies or degree requirements. After submission, students will receive an email notification of the decision at their UCSB account. Students in the College of Engineering or the College of Creative Studies should contact their advisors, even if the request pertains to a Letters & Science course. The boxes below summarize the various petitions students may submit.

General Education Requirements
Use this petition to request courses be applied towards General Education or Subject Writing requirements.
Credit & Enrollment Petitions
These petitions include to request the following:
- Concurrent Enrollment
- Credit Clarification (Legal Repeat)
- Repeat Clarification (Second Repeat)
- "Study List" Credit
Add/Drop/Grading Option Change
These petitions address modifying enrollment status or the grading option for individual courses and include:
- Add Course, Late* or Retroactive**
- Drop a Course, Late* or Retroactive**
- Grading Option Change, Retroactive**
- Request for an Independent Study Exception
*Late: after the add deadline. **Retroactive: after the quarter has ended
Course Load Change Petitions
Use these petitions to request a change in the minimum and maximum number of units allowed by the college:
- A Deficit Load (to enroll in fewer than 12 units for one quarter)
- A Permanent Load Deficit (to enroll in fewer than 12 units for more than one quarter)
- An Excess Load (to enroll in more than the maximum number of units published on GOLD)
Change of Major & College Forms
To request a change of major and/or change of college, or duel college status students should complete one of the following:
- Change of Major Form
- Change of College or Dual College Petition
- Double Major (including Memo of Understanding) Petition
