UC Online allows UCSB students access to online courses taught by expert faculty across the UC system. The online courses offered in fall, winter, or spring quarters can satisfy degree requirements or used to explore new subjects with the convenience and flexibility of online learning.
Enrollment Criteria
To be eligible to enroll in a UC Online course, a student needs to:

Be in regular academic standing

Have completed at least 12 UCSB units

Be enrolled in at least 12 UCSB units during the term they enroll in the UCOE course
Some exceptions can be made to these policies. Contact a Letters and Science advisor if you have questions.
How to Enroll in UCOE.
Students must enroll in courses through the UCOE website. After a course is complete, it will appear on a student's UCSB transcript and will count toward a student's UC GPA.
UCOE courses do not toward a student's academic residency requirement.

Students are typically allowed to enroll in only one UC Online course per quarter. Under some circumstances a College of Letters and Science student may enroll in more than one UCOE course. Students must meet with a Letters and Science advisor to request to enroll in more than one UCOE course.

It is important to note, students are required to follow the deadlines of the HOST campus offering the course. For adding, dropping, and other important deadlines, please contact the HOST campus Registrar’s Office.
Current course equivalencies are available on the course description page for each course, you will also be able to see if a course has been approved for GE or major credit. Courses that have already been approved for a GE area, do not require a petition. For all classes, students will receive UC unit credit toward graduation (provided you pass the course).
Yes, UC Online courses do count toward full-time enrollment for purposes of financial aid and housing for most students, however, there are certain groups with enrollment restrictions for whom this may not apply, including students using veteran benefits, International students, and NCAA student-athletes. If you have questions, please contact a College of Letters & Science advisor and/or the Office of Financial Aid.
Some UC Online courses are considered equivalent to UCSB courses and may serve as repeats under certain circumstances.
Please note: You cannot receive credit for a UC Online course if you already passed an equivalent course at UCSB or another school.
No, there are no additional tuition fees for UC Online courses. However, students are still responsible for typical course fees such as for textbooks and other course materials. UC Online courses may also require exam proctoring, which may result in an additional fee.
No, the Host campus will automatically send an official transcript to UCSB upon completion of the course.
After registering, you will receive an email indicating that you have provisionally registered for the course. Letters & Science and the Registrar’s Office will then determine your eligibility, and you will receive another email confirming whether you are eligible to take the course. If your enrollment is denied, you will be dropped from the course.
If your enrollment is approved, you will receive additional instructions via email on how to access your course. If the course is hosted on the host campus learning system, the campus will notify you with your campus credentials and how to activate them prior to the start of instruction. If you do not receive this information on how to log in to your course within 48 hours or before instruction starts, please contact your instructor.
